(China Plus) The world-famous drama Requiem will soon have a Chinese version starring veteran actor Ni Dahong and actress Sun Li.
The Chinese adaptation employs young Israeli director Yair Sherman.
He recalled the first time he watched Requiem, when he was just 15 years old.
"I went to drama class in my school. They took us to see Requiem when I think it was the first year it premiered. I remember when the curtain opened and the show began, I was astonished. I couldn't speak and I didn't look to the sides. I was only focused on stage. When the show ended, I was speechless. I went back home and I could not sleep. At that point I realized when you go to the theatre as an audience, if the show is strong enough, when you exit the theatre; you live as a different person."
Requiem, written and directed by Hanoch Levin, is based on three short stories by Anton Chekhov.
One of the stories is very tragic, regarding a young mother carrying her dying baby and wandering through the fields in search of a cure for him.
Chinese actress Sun Li portrays the mother.
"As a mother of three kids, actually I feel discouraged to play this role. On the other hand, I could well understand her situation. It depicts a young, helpless woman in this story."
Requiem was performed in China by the Israeli Cameri Theatre in 2004, 2006, and 2012 and was well received each time.
The Chinese adaptation of Requiem is scheduled to debut at the Beijing-based Poly Theatre in July 2019.
