Ed Sheeran announces Hong Kong dates to replace gigs cancelled after bike accident

(SCMP) Pop megastar Ed Sheeran has announced he will return to perform in Hong Kong this year, after a bike accident led to the singer’s shows planned for Hong Kong towards the end of 2017 being cancelled.

Two consecutive nights at Hong Kong Disneyland on April 17 and 18 have been added to an Asia tour that will also take place in Tokyo, Osaka, Seoul, Singapore, Bangkok and Jakarta.

The chart-topping British musician, who first performed in Hong Kong in 2015, broke his right wrist and left elbow when he was riding his bicycle in London in October 2017, leaving him unable to play the guitar. Sheeran broke the news of his arm injury to fans via a photo of his arm in a cast posted on Instagram, revealing he would no longer be travelling to South Korea, Japan and Tokyo in what he claimed was the first time in his career he had ever cancelled gigs.

While shows in Osaka, Tokyo and Manila were rescheduled for the following spring, dates in Taipei, Seoul, Hong Kong and Jakarta were eventually cancelled, reportedly because suitable venues were unavailable. “I’m really gutted that not all the postponed dates could be rescheduled and I am working hard with my team to try and come back to these places as soon as I can to see all of you. I’m sorry to everyone who has been affected by this,” the Thinking Out Loud star wrote at the time.

In October last year, fresh dates were announced for South Korea, Singapore and Bangkok, leaving Hong Kong fans – dubbed “Sheerios” – waiting for confirmation of his return to the city. The fans’ patience may well pay off for them if the singer reveals any new material he has been working on since his previous album, 2017’s Divide.

The bestselling album of 2018 in the UK and the second biggest in the US (after being narrowly beaten by Taylor Swift’s Reputation), Divide spawned the hits Shape of You, Galway Girl and Castle on the Hill, and additionally broke the record for the most songs from a single album on the British singles chart – with nine songs in the top 10 in a single week. Worldwide, the album’s tracks were streamed more than 56 million times on the day of release, smashing the record for most streams in a single day.

One of the world’s bestselling artists, Sheeran has sold more than 38 million albums and 100 million singles worldwide and has a raft of accolades to his name, including four Grammys, three Brit awards and three Billboard awards.

His next release is rumoured to be titled Subtract, although the singer has said it will not be out this year. However, in a radio interview last November, the 27-year-old teased that he had new material separate to his next full-length album. “I’ve got things coming out, I don’t know if they’re albums.

But I’ve got things coming out. The next ‘album album’ won’t be for a while,” he said.

Sheeran also revealed that once he was finished touring Divide, he would step away from the limelight for a while: “I’m going to do another blackout and go away for a year. It worked last time for both me and the public, I think it’s good to have a little break.”
