China-funded 'Green Book' wins at Golden Globes

"Green Book," funded in part by Alibaba Pictures, became the biggest winner receiving three honors at the 76th annual Golden Globes held in Los Angeles on Sunday.
The film took home three awards including, Best Motion Picture in the Musical/Comedy category; Best Actor in a Supporting Role in any Motion Picture (for Mahershala Ali); and Best Screenplay for a Motion Picture. The biopic of legendary rock band Queen "Bohemian Rhapsody" received Best Motion Picture in Drama category, while its star Remi Malik won best actor.
"Green Book," is a comedy-drama film based on the true story of an Italian-American bouncer who becomes the chauffeur of an African-American pianist on a tour through the 1960s American Deep South. During their tour, they are guided by "The Negro Motorist Green Book," a mid-20th century guidebook by Victor Hugo Green for black travelers who would tour in southern states during racial segregation and discrimination.
The film was directed by Peter Farrelly and stars Viggo Mortensen and Mahershala Ali. It was produced by Participant Media, DreamWorks Pictures and was co-funded by China's Alibaba Pictures.
Zhang Wei, president of Alibaba Pictures, said his film company decided to fund the film because of its excellent quality and unique artistic expression. "There are humorous dialogues, outstanding performances, and heartwarming and touching friendships in it."
Alibaba Pictures said it will import the film into Chinese market later.
The Golden Globes serves as one of the most important indicators for the upcoming Academy Awards. This means that the three wins of "Green Book" could secure its prospect at the Oscars. If it wins, Alibaba Pictures will be the first Chinese internet film company to have ever funded an Oscar-winning film. The other two leading internet entertainment companies, Amazon and Netflix, have already secured winners at previous Academy Awards.
Netflix succeeded once again at this year's Golden Globe Awards, with Alfonso Cuaron's "Roma" and Chuck Lorre's "The Kominsky Method" each taking home awards.
Canadian-born Korean actress Sandra Oh made history at the award ceremony as the first actress of Asian descent to win more than one Golden Globe, taking home the award for her performance in "Killing Eve." She and Andy Samberg co-hosted the Golden Globes night.
