(China Plus) A movie called "Dead Pigs" is coming soon to Chinese cinemas. It reflects the dramatic changes that happen in the lives of five different people due to an incident in which thousands of dead pigs floated down a river.
The film has given director Cathy Yan great recognition from critics and even landed her a deal with
Warner Bros. Pictures to helm DC's upcoming "Birds of Prey" film.
"Dead pigs was inspired by this true event in 2013, where 16,000 dead pigs were found floating to Shanghai. I personally was born in China and was raised in the U.S., but I would spend a lot of time back and forth. I was a reporter before I got into film, and so it's sort of like in so many ways became natural sort of starting point, or jumping point for a film, I thought."
The film's story opens with a pig farmer in the perilous situation of seeing all his pigs begin to die.
The man is in financial crisis and seeks help. He later gets involved with a relative who is a feisty salon owner. He also interacts with a sensitive busboy, an expat architect, and a disenchanted rich girl.
This Chinese-and-English language film is due out in Chinese cinemason January 25.
